What’s in a Name?

It goes without saying that growers take pride in the flowers they’re raising. Every day for months, they carefully keep an eye on them, tending them and providing the love and care needed for the crops to develop into the consumer-facing product we see in store and online today. So it makes sense that growers will often bestow a creative name onto the plant, solely based on what it reminds them of, whether it be how it smells (terpene profile), it’s colouring, or how it looks. Take for example Kush Cake, by 7ACRES: it gives off a cake-like aroma and is covered in white, icing-like crystals.

Sometimes the grower will get creative. They’ll cross genetics and bestow a new name based on a combination of the existing and cross plants, or on how they feel about the result. An example of this is the ever-popular, California-based Miracle Alien Cookies (MAC), which crosses Alien Cookies with a hybrid of Columbian and Starfighter. (it’s known to be a “miracle” that they crossed so well.)

However, in Canada, things are a bit different. As the regulating body over the cannabis industry, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) is strict, which means that most of the options sold on the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) are all the same — just marketed differently based on the producers’ recreational brand.

Take for example one of the most popular strains on the legal market, Pedro’s Sweet Sativa by WeedMD’s adult-use brand, Color Cannabis. A cross between a Dominican Sativa with White Russian and an unknown Indica, the strain is known for its sweet taste and smell, and was aptly named by WeedMD Chief Cannabis Officer (and long-time cultivator), Derek Pedro, because he loved it so much.

Compare Pedro’s Sweet Sativa with other popular strains like Jean Guy, Wappa, and SFV OG (San Fernando Valley OG), which maintain the same names regardless of the brands selling them. At that point it comes down to how the brand sells it and how the final, consumer-facing bud looks. Most of these strains are available via our online store.
